RACES OF STELLAR EVOLUTION

Postby Enker » Fri Nov 05, 2010 10:54 am

The following is some information on the major races that you will be encountering in STELLAR EVOLUTUON. These reflect the races currently found in the tactical board game as well as those encountered in the play-by-post forum. It is possible to roleplay different races other than Human (Terran) however we strongly reccomend that if you wish to do so that you contact a member of staff here on the board and fully outline both the race and your plans for the character and await a reply before submitting him or her for the game. Suggestions for new races, ships and worlds are greatfully appreciated and can be forwarded to a member of staff through the PM system on this board of through the 'Your Views' section of this forum thread.

TERRANS (HUMANS)

Postby Enker » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:23 am

Humanity grew and grew until the only place for them was among the stars, the earth and our own solar system now serves as the central hub of a galaxy spanning fleet. In light of discovering other races and worlds the people of the earth found that the jumble of nations and creeds required a single outward facing identity with which our people would be collectively known, and the name Terrans was bestowed upon us. National identity is still strong however, with the Terran Fleet hosting all nations and the addition of generations born on Mars and other planets have added new depth and dimensions to the idea of a national border. As the Terran Fleet, humanity has made trade agreements with multiple races, with chocolate and salt among their key exports and a standing military was founded to fight in small skirmishes against pirates and races who prefer hostile negociation.

Terrans appear as regular humans and are by far the most widespread of the races, able to acclimatise quickly and with a high birth rate. Those Humans born on planets with variable gravity of atmosphere are usually shorter, stronger, slightly quicker, etc than those born on earth, but the Terran-born humans remain the most rounded and prime examples of the Human race.

Less technically advanced than some of the other races, the Terrans use squad based tactics and versatile fighting units to take out bigger targets. Their real strength lies in their support units and fighters, which are capable of different battle stratergies, and their Medical Frigates, that can restore shields to damaged craft. In deep space Command Carriers serve as modile cities from which ships can embark on long-haul missions, and the design and structure of the military is almost unchanged from the examples of the present day.

MARAMARTER

Postby Enker » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:32 am

The Maramarter are beings of pure energy, a conciousness without physical form that can possess mechanical devices such as the large robotic bodies they inhabit to interact with the world around them. A harsh and humorless race, they once waged war across the galaxy against the Estellians and their allies, many of whom were fought to extinction. Considering the Estellians to be their ultimate foe, the Maramarter masterminded the destruction of their homeworld and hunted them until few remained and were forced into hiding. Rather than give up on their persuit, the Maramarter race chose instead to distance themselves from the universe and left their bodies and factories to grind to a hault, watching and waiting for such a time that the Estellian survivors emerged.

For thousands of years they waited, until their name was all but forgotten. Thousands of factory-worlds sat silent, an eternal mystery to the younger races that grew up in that time, archeological puzzles that no race could solve. Until the Terrans investigated a far flung moon wrapped in a singularity and uncovered a single surviving Estellian in stasis there. Waking her turned out to be all the catalist needed for those factories to spring back into life, building ships and new bodies so that they could wage war anew, damning any race that got between them. And so war came once again to the stars.

Possessing mechanical bodies and machinery, their conciousness flies their fleet through space with savage intent and whole worlds of factories spew out an endless supply of battleships. Because of this they value attack over defence, focusing on dealing as much damage as possible in as short a time as they can and prefering to do so from close quarters. Their metals have a red taint to them, characteristic of their factories reffining process, and at least for now they have shown no ability to possess non-Maramarter technology.

ESTELLIAN

Postby Enker » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:44 am

The Estellian race was considered to be the most advanced in the galazy, though their people were fragile they had created a means by which to create hard-light constructs of anything from a spaceship to a building. Their culture thrived and soon they expanded and expanded through the galazy, using their holographic constructs to search further and travel faster than was ever thought possible. A fundementally peaceful race, it was a sour day indeed that they stumbled upon the Maramarter who saw in them for the first time the potential to actually harm their immortal energy-based being and sought to purge the Estellians from the universe and their technology from history. Well liked, the Estellians found allies who aided them in the war against the Maramarter, but one by one these allies fell as the war waged on, and soon their very homeworld was destroyed. In an effort to escape the Maramarter the last surviving few Estellians went into hiding and simply vanished from existance. In their absence the Maramarter too slept.

That is until a science mission mistakenly woke a young Estellian female named Tai, who had been sleeping in cryogenic suspension inside an EMP singularity on the furthest corner of known space. Now the Maramarter wake and seek once again to destroy any remaining Estellians, and don't care who gets in their way.

Visually Estellians have violently red skin, black hair and naturally develop black tattoos as they reach maturity across the length of their bodies and around the edges of their faces. These tattoos resemble complex computer circuits though they are completely natural in origin. Additionally Estellians process data at an amazingly fast rate, learning languages in seconds and use almost any technology.

DRANA

Postby Enker » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:52 am

The Drana are a race of lizard-like beings who are cold blooded, they resemble Humans very closely and were the first alien race that were discovered among the stars. At the time of their discovery the Drana were undergoing a great plague on their homeworld that Terran doctors were able to cure as it held great simularities to the earth-sickness 'Chicken Pox'. As their culture is based around the belief that gifts must be resiplicated with equal or greater signs of respect the Drana immediatly placed themselves into a position of fealty to the Human race, insisting that they were at their service and wanting to work as indentured servants to repay their debt. Whilst this was unacceptable, they were allowed to join the Terran Fleet and serve as some of the best workers among the dockyards and as technicians onboard ships. They have no concept of money, their own world working on a barter system, and refuse compensation for any task they do, insisting that it is all part of repaying their world's blood-debt.

Possessing smooth scaled tan skin and yellow eyes, the Drana are human-like in form and possess only very small tails that hang from the base of their bottom. Slightly pointed ears and a preference for meat over vegetables and a dislike of the cold are also common. Visually they are considered very attractive and secreet pheremones to attract mates. The Drana have only small ships of their own, mostly decomissioned now that they are a part of the Terran fleet.

STYGIANS

Postby Enker » Mon Nov 22, 2010 1:16 pm

The Stygian race is ancient, and is entirely made up of nomadic monks who follow the call of the 'Cosmic Web'. As a people they venerate and worship the act of War, believing that only through conflict does a people evolve and expand their technical horizons, these beliefs expand to apply to other races, though they have never waged war upon any race but themselves. Today they exist as monks and scholars, following the teachings of their religion and occasionally appearing at battlefields after they are long empty to venerate the dead and return fallen heroes to their homeworld.

Technologically the Stygians are massively advanced, but only in the fields of medicine and weaponry. Their knowledge is a closely guarded secret, much of which is kept inside a large physical book known as the Technomicon, that is said to contain designs for weapons so powerful that they could end creation. The Stygians, as followers of their way, record and recount every battle and discovery other races make in the field of warfare that it is not forgotten.

Visually Stygians have deep blue skin as it it were almost black, with human-like bodies from the head to the groin, where a spider's abdomen and legs begin. They are roughly six feet tall and all wear the black and gray robes and hoods of their order.

THE NIL COLLECTIVE

Postby Enker » Wed Dec 31, 2014 4:39 am

Many races have ancient names for the Nil, they call them the ‘World Eaters’ and the ‘Harbringers of Destruction’. These races, who have explored further
and colonised greater regions of space than the Terrans, have each experienced the devistation that the Nil fleet can cause. In some cases losing
not just colonies, but whole systems and being reduced to space faring as a means of survival.

The Nil are giant space-born creatures, huge in scale and native to the void. They are born hungry and travel through space consuming everything that finds
itself in their path. Biologically speaking they are simple creatures, akin to elements of the Human body but on a massive scale. Here a blood vessel,
there a beating heart. Individually the Nil are a smaller threat, but added together they are an intense organism made up of thousands of components.

Spawned in dying stars where it is warmest, the Nil spread ever outward, growing in size as more organisms join the collective. Efforts were made in the
past by multiple races to seek out these spawning grounds and destroy them, ending the threat that the Nil pose, but to date none have been successful.
